The denture is a replacement for the old aged patients, for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. Dentures are of two types, complete and partial dentures which can be removed. Complete dentures are made for those patients with all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures used when few natural teeth remain.

 

Complete Dentures

Complete dentures might be conventional or immediate when the teeth removed and the gum tissue heals completely. Usually, conventional denture requires minimum 8 to 12 weeks for the placement in the mouth after the teeth have been removed. Nowadays, immediate dentures are made and can be positioned as the teeth get removed so, the patient need not wait for teeth during the healing period. However, bones and gums shrink during the healing period and it might be a disadvantage of immediate dentures as compared to conventional dentures. But, the immediate denture can be a temporary solution at list during the healing period until conventional dentures are made.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are made when one or more natural teeth remain in the mouth which is fabricated sometime with or without metal clasp for better placement. While fixed partial denture replaces one or more teeth by creating a bridge made of artificial tooth caps on either side of the space. This bridge cemented for the restoration of missing teeth space and prevents other teeth from changing position. This is a more natural looking artificial appliance.

People using denture sometimes has a problem of sliding which can be resolved by using denture adhesives or pastes for keeping the denture in proper position throughout the day.

Are there any alternatives to conventional Dentures?

Dental implants can be used as an alternative for supporting custom made bridges, excluding the need for a denture. Usually, The cost required for this treatment more, but the implants and bridges closely resemble the feel of natural teeth. How do New Dentures feel like?

As you start using new denture, it may feel a little odd or loose for some weeks till the cheeks and tongue learn to keep them in place. Also, you may experience minor irritation, more salivation but it will decrease as the mouth adjusts the denture.

Dentures drastically improve your appearance, smile, pronunciation and closely resemble your natural teeth. They can be noticeable to other only when observed carefully.

Will Denture make eating easier?

You will need a little practice while eating with new dentures, it might feel uncomfortable to few patients but, will resolve this difficulty and used to within few weeks. To get habitual for eating, start with soft foods, cut into small pieces and chew slowly using both sides of your mouth. As soon as you able to chew your food comfortably, try some other food until you return to a normal diet. Avoid having hot, hard foods or foods that are extremely sticky.

Can I wear Dentures for 24 hours/day?

You will be given some instructions by the dentist, how long to wear dentures and when it should be removed. Dentist will ask you to wear your new denture for all the time for first several days including while you sleep. Though this could be uncomfortable for someone, but it is necessary to identify where may need adjustment to your denture. Once the adjustments are made, you will be instructed to wear the denture all the day except during sleep. This is important to allow gum tissues to rest and cleansing by the tongue and saliva. You can wear your denture again in the morning.
